I didn’t drink chocolate milk for years because cow milk hurts my digestive system and chocolate milk (either cow milk or a dairy alternative) is just too high in sugar for me to drink. I’ve heard a lot of athletes say that it’s great to have post workout or that it cures hangovers, but in my humble opinion, I just don’t believe that to be true. Chocolate milk is filled with sugar and bunch of bullshit if you ask me. As written on Beatrice’s website (a large milk producer here in Canada), the ingredients in their chocolate milk are: partly skimmed milk, sugar, cocoa, salt, carrageenan, artificial flavour, vitamin A palmitate and vitamin D.
I’m just going to say that I want artificial flavouring to go fuck itself and get out of the “food” industry. It doesn’t belong in food, and it definitely doesn’t belong in our bodies.
If you’re someone who has a dairy allergy or is intolerant to lactose (happens to be 65-70% of the global population), then I have a dairy free alternative for you!
This homemade hemp milk is rich in protein and omega 3s, raw cocoa for antioxidants and maple syrup for a perfect balance of sweetness in addition to abundant minerals. I also have a DIY hemp milk that you should check out too!
I really love adding collagen to this recipe to really boost the amino acid profile. Just 1 tbsp of collagen delivers 18 different amino acids and 9g of protein.
In the words of Barney Stinson, “It’s legend…. wait for it…. dary”.
Also, really quickly before you read the recipe, I’ll just let you know that while shooting the pictures for this recipe, there was an epic fail which caused nearly 500ml of chocolate milk to spill on my floor, my white background destroyed, and my patience was tested. Unfortunately I was only able to take 2 pictures (besides the fail picture of course because those are important too haha) but I’m deciding to publish the recipe anyways. Enjoy!
- If you don’t like stevia, can substitute with 1/4 C maple syrup however this will quickly increase sugar content.
- The collagen can be omitted if you don’t have it on hand or wish to make this recipe vegan.
