I grew up on 3.25% homogenized milk and loved every sip of it. I used to drink roughly 1 L of homo milk a day as a preteen! I remember one day in junior high my best friend and I bought a pint of half and half cream and we shared the container together. That’s how much we loved creamy milk!
I loved milk until I got symptoms IBS when I was 18 due to high stress and after that lactose has really been disruptive to my digestive health. It causes me so much stomach pain it’s not even worth the indulgence! Except for the occasional scoop of ice-cream cone on a hot summer day…. THEN I’ll make an exception but only after taking a digestive enzyme.
When I was 18 I started drinking almond milk daily. In my smoothies, elixirs, baking with it etc. Then cashew milk became more popular and I starting drinking that instead because I enjoyed it more due to it’s creamier texture compared to almond milk. I’m happy that dairy free alternatives are becoming more popular in commercial grocery stores however they are a big investment! They can run a pretty high price tag depending on what brand you’re buying.
I recently did an elimination diet and chose to eliminate almonds and cashews as they are something that I consume pretty much daily and wanted to give my body a break, so I turned to hemp milk instead. Do you want to know what that cost me? just over $5 for less than 1 litre! HOLY SHIT.
That’s so expensive and knew that wasn’t sustainable in my life. That’s why I made my own and I’m sharing the recipe with you! It’s so freaking simple to make and you can do it in about 2 minutes. It doesn’t have a bunch of guar gum, xanthan gum, locust bean gum, vegetable oil and all that other stuff in it that you would find if you bought it off a shelf. PLUS it’s a fraction of the cost. I did the food costing for this recipe and for the price that I bought my hempseed at, it came to a total of $1.44/L of DIY hemp milk. You’re welcome, wallet!
I prefer to use the hemp milk cold, because as a result of not using xanthan gum or guar gum in this recipe, I find that it separates if you heat it to use in a hot drink for example.
I love the earthiness of hemp milk. I’ve always found hemp seeds to be delicious and love using them in baking recipes for an additional omega 3 and antioxidant boost. When you choose to drink hemp milk, you’re also choosing to get more omega 3s in your diet too!
Fun fact about Omega 3s: This poly unsaturated essential fat helps with cognitive function and brain development, decreasing inflammation, lubricating your joints, improving skin, hair and nail quality, and can boost your memory too!
