Yoga is the best. My opinion is obviously biased, however I do believe that it is a great activity, especially in large crowds. The energy shared amongst a group of people moving their body and focusing on breath is beautiful. As someone who has worked in the service/restaurant industry for many years, I found that the practice of yoga supported my body as I worked long days in tough, sweaty and stressful environments. Myself and many of my coworkers struggled with lower back pain, shoulder tension and fatigued legs after a shift and I began doing simple stretches before I went to bed was when my lower back and leg pain finally began to feel relief. Yoga has been in my life since I was 18 years old, however my relationship with it was very on and off, and it was my journey of healing while experiencing grief is what led my practice to be consistent, and the emotional and physical conditional from yoga to be much more powerful. If interested, you can read about my yoga journey here.
I have studied both Yin and Vinyasa yoga practice and I can confidently say that these two forms of practice have made body become more connected with my mind and soul.
Here are the two forms of yoga I have studied:
- Yin yoga: the practice of holding postures for 3-8 minutes, allowing your mind to turn inwards during the duration of the poses. The definition of yin practice is finding peace and stillness in what is uncomfortable. It’s about listening to your body. YIn is about sending love and breath inwards and working through tension and fascial release. This can be particularly difficult for those who have a hard time remaining still and quiet, however is a very powerful and mindful practice.
- Vinyasa yoga: very different compared to Yin. It is a fun and dynamic, flowing form of yoga. Vinyasa is a form of yoga that emphasizes breathing sequences and flowing between different poses. Many forms of yoga include vinyasa by emphasize flowing in between poses and breathing as you move through the poses.
